As part of our commitment to grassroots sport and Indigenous development in Australia, we’re pleased to announce we are expanding our partnership with the AFL to include the AFL Indigenous Programs.
This program will deliver football, health, education, leadership and employment opportunities for Indigenous men & women. The partnership includes the following AFL Indigenous Programs:
- State Under 15 Indigenous Camps
- Under 15 National Kickstart Championships
- Under 15 Flying Boomerangs program
- Female Under 18 Kickstart Camps
- Female Under 18 National Kickstart Championships
- National Indigenous Coaching Academy
- Indigenous Ambassadors program
- Indigenous All Stars game
The Coles AFL Indigenous Programs partnership will for the first time see the introduction of a female Under 18 Indigenous camp in which the top players will be selected to compete at the historical Under 18 National Kickstart Championships to be held in Melbourne.
For 30 years Redkite has been helping Australian children and young people with cancer and their families, offering essential emotional, financial and educational support through every stage of the cancer journey. In January this year, we partnered with them, pledging to help Redkite help the 11,000 children and young people in Australia who are cancer patients or survivors by raising $5 million for the charity in 2013. We’re happy to announce we’re well on the way to achieving this target with our customers and team members helping to raise over $2.5 million for Redkite so far.
These funds will help Redkite pay for essentials like food, fuel, counselling & education support, so thank you to everyone who has purchased our specially marked Coles bread, participated in fundraising activity, donated at the register (or online) and flown a redkite in store. Every day an additional four children or young people will be diagnosed, yet only around half of their families are aware of the support provided nationally by Redkite. Your continued generosity will help bridge this gap and ensure families aren’t missing out on Redkite’s support.
We’re proud to announce we recently received an award for our Foodbank Australia partnership. Over the last 10 years, our food donations have created over 10 million meals for Aussies in need.
Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organisation and we were awarded their Patron’s Award, which is given to a company that has demonstrated leadership, innovation, creativity and impact over time in its partnership with Foodbank. Last year alone, we donated over 1.2 million kilograms of food and groceries which was enough to prepare nearly 1.7 million meals. In order to make this happen, we have integrated our supply processes to ensure regular donations to Foodbank warehouses around Australia. This allows them to more easily distribute the food.
We’re very proud of the work our team does behind the scenes to make these donations happen, and we’re delighted this has been recognised. Of course none of these donations would be possible without the tireless work of the Foodbank volunteers who distribute this food to charities and community groups across Australia, so thank you to the Foodbank team.
Did you know that one in 10 babies born in Australia today will develop a food allergy? This worrying statistic indicates that life-threatening allergic reactions in children aged four and under have increased fivefold over the last 10 years. Alarmingly, too, approximately 10 Australians die as a result of allergic reactions (analphylaxis) each year.
That’s why Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia has declared May 13-19 “Food Allergy Week” to increase community awareness and understanding. As part of the “one in 10” campaign, it’s asking everyone to show support by painting one fingernail out of 10 and making a donation to the cause at foodallergyaware.com.au – you’ll also find details about events planned for the week.
How is Coles supporting?

Earlier this year, we announced our partnership with Redkite, a national charity supporting children and young people with cancer and their families. Redkite needs to at least double in size in order to reach all who need their essential support as there are families right now who can’t access Redkite’s support programs
This month we’re asking you to help change that by flying a Redkite in store. Simply follow these 3 easy steps:
- Pick up a $2 Redkite Donation Card at any Coles register.
- Draw your face and write your name on the card.
- Stick your card up on the donations wall in your local Coles.

At Coles, we’ve been a proud supporter of Guide Dogs Australia since 1982. Many of our customers have grown up with the iconic collection dogs in store and others tell us their kids look forward to greeting & placing a coin in the guide dogs each visit and even have a name for him/her. Though it might be small change for some, these donations provide much needed funds to Guide Dogs Australia, which help them deliver their vital orientation and mobility services to vision impaired Australians.
Catering to the mobility needs of those who are blind and vision impaired, Guide Dogs Australia not only provide and train dogs but also teach people to use canes and other mobility devices. This helps give them the skills and confidence to move around their local communities safely and independently.

Thanks to our Coles Community Food with SecondBite program, fresh produce bound for landfill is feeding hungry Australians. It’s a startling statistic – 1.2 million Australians don’t have access to affordable, safe and nutritious food. But through our partnership with SecondBite, a national not-for-profit food rescue organisation, 1.9 million kilograms of fresh fruit and vegetables and bakery goods have been donated by Coles to food agencies. They distribute or cook the food and serve to the hundreds of thousands of people in need of a well-balanced, nutritious diet.
The program runs in two different ways; in metropolitan areas the food is transported in refrigerated SecondBite vans from Coles stores to the food agencies, while in regional areas, SecondBite arranges for local agencies to collect the food directly from our stores under SecondBite’s innovative Community Connect model.
Last week, Curtis Stone visited the SecondBite team in Queensland and got to see the work they do first-hand and meet some of the people the program assists. Below are some of the photos from the day:

We’ve never been more conscious of seafood sustainability and this Friday we’re proud to support Sustainable Seafood Day. To kick off celebrations, Curtis Stone visited the Gold Coast Tiger Prawn Farm in Woongoolba on the Gold Coast and met the farmers who provide delicious fresh prawns to our stores. He helped catch the prawns and watched over the process from water to store (while sampling some of the award-winning prawns along the way). Curtis even helped a few lucky customers at our Runaway Bay store pick their seafood for dinner!
The Gold Coast Tiger Prawn Farm has supplied tiger prawns to our stores for 6 years and employs 40 local people. The farm produces 1,000 tonnes of prawns annually and recently received an independent review by WWF and have been recognised as a responsible seafood provider. These reviews are part of our partnership with WWF to aide our transition to responsibly sourced seafood. We’re also helping our customers make more informed choices when shopping for seafood with clearer packaging and a firm Australia-first sourcing policy.
Australians love their seafood and our farmers and fishmongers are some of the best in the business with a passion for seafood sustainability. Next time you’re in store, ask the team and they’d be happy to show you some delicious options and we hope like us, you celebrate Sustainable Seafood Day with some yummy barbecued prawns or fresh Tasmanian salmon.
We’re proud to be a major supporter of Coeliac Australia and once again we’re partnering with them for their annual awareness week. Coeliac Awareness Week, 13 to 20 March, seeks to provide information about Coeliac disease and support for those with the condition.
What is Coeliac Disease?
In people with Coeliac disease, the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. This can cause damage to the digestive system and affect nutrient absorption and other serious health consequences.
How is Coles supporting?
A gluten-free diet is essential for people with this condition, but it doesn’t need to be bland and uninteresting with our wide range of gluten-free products and recipes. We’re also making gluten-free products more affordable for customers with our discount card for members of the Coeliac Society of Australia. This Australia Day, we are pleased to announce our new partnership with
Redkite – a national charity supporting children and young people with cancer and their families.
More than 11,000 families in Australia are currently dealing with the impact of having a child or young person with cancer. Thanks to advances in treatment, the majority of these children and young people will survive. Tragically, one in five children will not. Fortunately, there is Redkite, and this year, we are joining forces with Redkite to help support even more families through the incredibly challenging cancer journey.
Redkite is a national charity that supports children and young people with cancer (up to the age of 24) and their families through the entire cancer journey. Redkite receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of individuals, organisations and corporate partners to provide much-needed emotional, financial and educational support.
From today, five cents from every loaf of Coles Smart Buy bread and Coles Brand bread will be donated to Redkite. We are also making it easy for customers and Team Members to make cash donations at the register, through coles online and self-service checkouts or directly to Redkite. The money raised at Coles will go towards providing young cancer patients and their families with financial assistance for the essentials like food, fuel and household bills; information, support and counselling; and help in keeping up with the demands of school, work or university.
